How to use ‘Screener’ on www.theaic.co.uk
This month we are taking a look at ‘Screener’ which helps you easily sort and analyse investment companies. This is found in ‘Research Tools’ on the AIC site.
If you are a regular user of the AIC's site you are probably currently using ‘Compare investment companies’ to do this. However, Screener allows you to dig deeper and compare a more manageable number of investment companies in a sector. This is done by selecting a combination of criteria such as charges, yield, market cap, discount/premium and gearing.
Let me show you how…
So, for this example I chose to narrow the universe to companies with ongoing charges under 1%, yield above 3%, market cap that's over £500m and a discount that's under 10%. See the image below.
You can see the highlighted option circled in red which will bring up additional criteria which you can use to filter your companies if required. These include management group, manager tenure (how many years the manager has been in place), returns over 1, 3, 5 and 10 years, 5 year dividend growth, dividend frequency, dividend cover, and investment style.
Once you have completed your initial search you can see a number of additional criteria underneath which will help you further refine your search results. These include share price performance, NAV performance, discount/ premium, charges/ gearing and dividend data. All of this data is fully sortable.
A table of your results comes up called ‘Review and Analyse Your Search Results’ which is shown above. You can see the ‘scales’ icon in the red box which allows you to access the ‘Investment Compare’ function. You can then tick your chosen companies and compare them in a more user-friendly side-by-side view. See example shown.
You can also see a chart of a company’s performance. I have selected four investment companies and selected the ‘graph’ icon to compare their 5 year share price total returns. There's also additional charts and data available.
